Twit-two-wooooo

So, when I'm not pestering you all about what I've worn, or bought, or gripes I have with the plus size market, I am a Brown Owl. As in, I lead a group (troop for my US readers) of Brownies aged 7-10.

I have been a part of this organisation for years (since the age of 5 -> 27) and can't imagine my life any differently.

And now, with my life taking interesting pathways (including this corner of cyber space), I am desperate to prove to these girls that it is stronger to work together, then against each other.

Today, we worked on skills like memory, and watching them working together - skills that one doesn't have, the other helping them with... and it made me wonder:

When do we as adults 'learn' the behaviour whereby we notice what is 'wrong' with the people around us, not what is right:

Those trousers are too tight - instead of that colour really suits her.

And seeing those girls working together, made me so proud.

Much love my lovelies,

K x

  1. That's so nice! Such a great sentiment. I loved being in the Guides, such a great time. Keep up the hard work, now more than ever young girls need positive role models, not the vacuous, challenged women in today's media..

  2. Awww, thanks Becky, means a lot - just after this past few weeks when we've all been talking body image and things... seeing the girls working together just clicked - it had a different meaning for me tonight.

I think I'm learning more from them then they are from me xx

It's an extremely bad habit, and I know it's one that my parents have as well. I still struggle with it, but it's always easier to point out the negative than the positive it seems.

You've inspired me to write my own post about this. http://bit.ly/wVh00c

  6. Fellow Brown Owl here! I went through Guiding as a girl too, but left at 12 because Guides was a horrible experience for me.

One of the things I love is watching them work together and the different strengths they have, and how they work them together for the activity. Seeing shy, quiet 7yr olds turn into confident, louder, giggling 10yr old sixers is amazing.

  7. Completely agree with you there Nicola. I was lucky to be able to go from Guides into Young Leader pretty much straight away, as my Mam was a Brown Owl at the time.

We've had a few 'special' girls in the past, who we have worried about whether they would settle, and seeing the confident tweenagers leaving us is just so rewarding.

I'm planning an activity in a couple of weeks, which I can't wait to blog about the results!
