Dress for Danger

When I saw this dress on the Simply Be website, I had visions of wearing it to the office, for smart days, or days when I needed a bit of a pick me up.

It happened to arrive in time for my business trip to London, where I'd made some plans to meet a few pals throughout the week for dinner, and knew I wanted to dress to impress, so this dress was carefully thrown into my suitcase, and off I went!

I was over the moon by the fit of this dress. The length is the perfect midi on me, and the heavy crochet over lay to the dress added structure and volume, although it did make me think of the roadwork fencing material:

I know a lot of people would have looked at the dress and thought it was the perfect dress for Valentines day, but the fact I've never had Valentines plans means that never crossed my mind - I was, however, super happy with the early mini Gal-entines dinner I had with Tanya, Katt, Lottie and Em. The perfect tonic.

The beautiful Charli has recently picked up this dress, and while I'm rocking the roomy 24, Charli has sized down to the 16 for figure hugging amazingness:

Keep an eye out on her blog for her review in the coming days.

Monochrome Convert

Last week I was off to London for the week for work - so not only was it a capsule week of dressing out of my suitcase, but it called for smart. Business smart.

My take on business dress means there is usually a 'Kathryn' twist - a bright cardigan, or some statement necklaces. This week called for none of that.

Monday saw me getting up at 3:45am to get my 6am train (and pack), so my face is tired, and my outfit is missing a key piece. A piece that pretty much made my outfits the statement I so wanted, without losing the 'smart'.

Simply Be Victoriana Lace top, and Simply Be Houndstooth skirt (no longer available)

What is this magical trandormative piece of clothing, I hear you ask? It was this duster jacket.

Worn with my cardigan underneath, it was the perfect layering combination to tackle London stuffy transport (how hot is the tube though, really??)

The point is, it became my outerwear - I was strutting along the streets of London, head held high, with this statement outerwear, and when I got to the offices, it was shook off, and hung up in the corner, as I became the business dress, smart, Kathryn.

Day 2: Simply Be Checked Skater Dress and Duster Jacket

Day 3: Simply Be Shirt and Tie, with Houndstooth Skirt

Day 4: Simply Be Checked Midi Dress

Day 5: Victoriana Lace Top in White, with Houndstooth Skirt

My last day in London was met with tired face, and a 'rushed outta my room without taking a selfie but now I'm waiting for my colleague' Instagram photo, but at least you can see the detail on my top, right?

It certainly seems that this one jacket has set my workwear colour palette to monochrome - and I've got to say, I think I like it!

Much love my lovelies,

Fun Times in London

At the start of the week, I had the pleasure of heading down to London for my filming on The Chase - a UK TV Quiz show on ITV.

It was a super nerve wracking experience, but so much fun!

For obvious reasons, I can't reveal much from the day itself. Even worse, my phone / camera / DS was taken off me straight away, meaning I haven't got many photos from the day itself (other than a signed picture of Bradley, as well as a picture of the Chaser I was up against!). It was AWFUL not being able to check my phone throughout the day, and Instagram EVERYTHING!

Once I got home at 10pm, I did manage to snap a quick snap of the outfit combination:

Prom Dress from Simply Be (Gifted)
LMD Cardigan (no longer available)

Which was super comfortable and clashing - perfect!

I had my makeup on on the day, and multiple reapplications during filming as my glasses were steaming up, and makeup sliding off my face under the lights!

Bradley was super lovely, and we were all made to feel wonderfully at home and supported throughout the process.

My episode won't be on until early next year, but don't worry, I'll let you all know when you can catch me on the telly!

Much love my lovelies,

Plus North

I am rather excited about this wonderful event!

In February I went to London to meet some fantastic women, and to take part in a catwalk show.

There were issues with it. Lots of them. But I'm going to share with you some of the photos of me in that show:

Now, I didn't show them in February as, honestly, I wasn't happy with them. I noticed this, or that, but now, after 4 months, I don't see that, I see the glint in my eye and the FUN I was having! Because it was fun. To be at an event ran by girls, for girls, with brands that know girls.

And when I heard about another event, PlusNorth, being ran by two women, one of whom was at PlusLondon2, and so learn by some of the errors, but more importantly, build on what as so great about PlusLondon2.

It is sponsored by a number of wonderful and amazing brands, the tickets are only £5, and there is promised to be canapes, wine and goody bags.

For more information:

Will I be seeing you there?

Much love my lovelies,

Ghost Post

Hi my lovelies!

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know about a great competition out there, that is just too good not to share!

Evans has teamed up with Ghost The Musical (tissues at the ready!) to offer their customers a fantastic chance to win two tickets to see the West End play and spend a night in luxury at a 4* London hotel.

The winner and their guest will be able to enjoy the critically acclaimed musical from two of the Piccadilly Theatre’s best seats before getting to indulge in three courses of fine Italian cuisine at Franco’s, an established and award-winning restaurant in St. James’. And of course, dinner comes complete with selected wine.

Once dinner is done, it’s only a short stroll down the exclusive Jermyn Street to the 4* Cavendish Hotel which is perfectly placed for visiting the shops and boutiques of Bond Street, Regent Street and Oxford Street as well as many of London’s top attractions.

Entering the prize draw competition could not be easier:

All people need to do is visit www.evans.co.uk/ghost then enter and submit their details.

Disclaimer - by publicising this competition, I am also in the chance of winning two tickets to the event, however, I do think that it is an amazing prize, and hope one of my readers!

Plus London 2

Wow. It's Tuesday and I've still not recovered from my epic weekend in London. No, I don't mean hungover (for those that met me / talked to me / saw me would be surprised to know, I didn't drink!!), I just mean tired and achy and all in all, rather pathetic!

My train was booked for 9am, the Mother volunteered to drive me to the Metro station at 7:30am. I was then left with an hour kicking about in the drafty, but oh so pretty, Newcastle Central Station:

I could have got a coffee (er, helloooooo- #frugalfeb here!) so instead waited patiently for my First Class carriage to arrive! Oh yes, First Class to London for £33 you say? Thanks!!

So, extra leg room, single seat and 2 cups of tea, one bottle of water, one can of diet coke and a Ham Croissant later, I was pulling into Kings Cross having been tweeting like a king!

I thought I was dressed for travelling:

But it turned out my orange dress is blumming warm! Yes, WARM! I spent most of the journey around London too hot for words!! I did however make it to Anna Scholz only 40 mins late (my train arrived when I should have been getting to her studio - I was always going to be late!)

As I walked in the door I was finally able to meet the charming Caroline, and the majestic Mhairi! They were my rock for the entire 21 hours I was in London. I could not have got through the day without them!

They took me on a tour of the studio... well, no, not really, they just took me to the great room where all the clothes were living!! Wow. Just wow. Her collection is well crafted, cut to flatter, and with the most amazing prints! My favourite of the day had to be this dress:

Thanks to Lauren for this photo!
It fits, it highlights, it flows, it does just what you need a dress like this to do! Perfection.

Other bloggers - archedeyebrowfatsallyreblogtobealive - have blogged about their thoughts on the collection and I can't honestly add anything further. There is still a sense of fun with her prints and her cuts, and I do think I finally need to take the plunge and order some genuine Anna (rather than concessions Anna, working with other companies).

The Q&A was a lovely opportunity to discuss our gripes and our complaints, and hear what Anna and Liz had to say. As usual with the complains about the models being used, the answer is - there aren't (m)any for us to use.

Also, the conversations about how + ranges are being consigned to the internet, as though they don't want us to leave the house, was certainly a passionate and insightful one.

But time was pressing on, and us models had somewhere to be! As the offices were somewhere on the other side of London, we had to call the Q&A short, and leave. All the rushing around of earlier, coupled with the heat (yes HEAT) of the tube etc meant I was a little under the weather when we arrived at the office - not helped by the lack of food / drink since the 1st Class Experience. My mood was lifted by water and the promise of pretty clothes to try on. Ummmmmm. Well, once photos emerge of said clothes, I'll let you decide.

After a rush to get to the hotel in Paddington (from Parsons Green), then back to The Strand at Embankment - losing my ticket along the way - Mhairi and Caroline really did keep me sane! Arriving a little late due to the snow, we were rushed into the tiny room. I wasn't given my clothes, I had to find them. We didn't know what order we were walking in, it was 'Who ever is ready'. We had a carpet with every chance of tripping up over. We hadn't practiced the 'posing', or the 'twirling'. Thankfully the likes of Boombands Em and Caroline's cheering made up for what could have been a rather silent reaction.

8pm and the 'audience' had arrived. I felt like putting a disclaimer out saying we hadn't chosen our own clothes, when really, it was quite clear we hadn't.

Catwalk over, and it was time to get changed again, back into the swing of the party (please note I'm glossing over the catwalk experience for a reason. Please see this post: Open Letter.

The outfit: now the rubbish blogger that I am, I had forgotten my camera, and was too busy talking to people to take photos at any point during the event. All the credit for this stunning photo goes to Claire (Chief Organising wonder) and her wonderful husband Rob!

Kathryn, Becky (Mrs BeBe) and Gina (of an Eclectic kind)

The dress is the Collectif dress, and the bra is Ewa Michelik. I love her. They got a lot of attention through the night, and I honestly can't wait until more pictures emerge!

I talked to many, introduced myself to some, and generally had a BLAST! I got fitted by Elomi (I had the right sized bra on - but she wanted to check and make sure - very thorough!) and I'm now wearing my free full cupped black bra. Now, it's not to my taste, but sometimes a girl needs a full cup.

Red Bows boutique (a +size vintage specialist) had some stunning pieces, but as I was in the middle of #frugalfebruary, it had to be a no.

The pop up photo studio was a great addition, and the cupcakes (my only sustenance for the entire night) were to die for! Thank you Wendy Cakes!

The event was great fun, but travel weary and model exhausted (with out the help of the class A drugs, I don't know how they do it!), Mhairi and I were tired, hungry, and hyper at the same time! Off we toddled in the snow to get the tube back to Paddington, in the hope that we found somewhere to eat. SUCCESS! A lovely Italian Roast Dinner awaited us in the restaurant right next to the hotel. Full on roast beef, and excited by the day we had had, we tried on each others clothes, and chatted to the wee small hours.

Thank you once again to Claire and her team of willing helpers - it was a great success. No sour taste left. Which just shows what an amazing event it was. It meant I could meet some women I'm in awe of, in love with, and in lust over. And some are all three!

Much love my lovelies,

Workwear throughout the week...

Instead of boring you all with 'What I've worn TODAY' posts, I thought a collaborative effort would be even better.

So, Monday and Tuesday was business casual, as normal, with Wednesday and Thursday 'dress down', and Friday business casual.

My plan was to try to team different items together on Monday, and I think this actually worked:

This blouse is from Evans ages ago, and as you can tell, I have to be be realy careful as to the bra I wear with it. But, teamed with my Domino Dollhouse skirt, and a black cardigan, I was ready to business dress it up!!

But on Tuesday, with the arrival of my GlossyBox, I really wanted a green outfit I could team with the Emerald Eyeliner that came with the box.

And so, with my ASOS dress, and black tights, I am aware I was hardly 'daring', but I felt the eyeliner added a certain something to it.
Wednesday saw me with a nurse and doctors appointment, so was not going to go for anything more fashion forward, so opted for my new SimplyBe skinny jeans and a old Evans hanky hem (I said it was old!) geometric tee:

I teamed it with my Fred Perry grey and pink slip on 'sneakers', and I felt quite studenty!

Thursday is another dress down day (oh how I love these when I'm not training - can wear trainers and jeans and things).

Yes, you guessed it, the above jeans made an appearance, along with the 'new' top I received from eBay (again, ordered before #FrugalFeb started!):

This is certainly more on the casual side of my dressing scale, and I don't feel particularly smart in it, but still business appropriate for a 'Dress Down' day.

Looking forward to a smart day tomorrow if I'm honest. I know my work ethic improves when I'm dressed for it!
Ah, well, that optimisim for the business dress Friday was before the weather decided to drop a degree or two, so I've opted for my muted colour palette and comfort today:

An empire line dress in a white on black paisley print, with a little ruffle, this is my 'I want to look smart but I'm not really feeling it' dress. It is shorter than my usual tastes, but beause of the cut, I don't feel it is too indecent!!

Dress: ASDA approx 1 year ago
Cardigan: M&A approx 4 years ago
Tights: M&S
Pumps: ASDA 2 weeks ago

Part of the reason for the muted palette I think is that I know what I want to wear to +London2 this weekend, and didn't want to have to quickly wash it!! So the "Blood Orange" dress is my choice for travelling in, my Collectif Dress is for the evening event, and I'm not sure for travelling back yet. Might opt for the Wine Skinny Jeans... We'll see when I get a bit more packing done tonight.

Much love my lovelies,

Cute Blog Award

A few weeks ago, the lovely TraceyB: http://traceyb-ablogisforlife.blogspot.com/, nominated me for a 'Cute Blog' award:

"the wonderful Kathryn at http://misskathrynsmisstakes.blogspot.com/ she has only been doing her blog a bit longer than me but she's very commited with regular and intersting posts"

And I have to say, I was honoured by this. Tracey started blogging shortly after me, but was the first person that I know of who followed me beacause of my blog, and that still means a lot!

Now...

Rule time!
Upon receiving this award you are to:
1)Link back to the person who awarded you
2)Answer all of the award questions
3)Award as many bloggers that you think are worthy of this award and make them aware of it.

What is your go to make-up brand?
I'd have to say No 7 now. I used to be infatuated by Benefit, but found their counter staff rude and unhelpful, chosing instead to talk to one another, instead of helping helpless ol' me find out how to use their products!

What was your favourite fashion trend of 2011?
Other than colour (who'd've guessed ey?), I'd have to say tea dresses. I know this trend has been around for some time now, but it looks here to stay for this S/S12.

What is your favourite dessert?
I'd have to go with something like HD Prailines and Cream icecream, but I'm really not picky!

What is your favourite colour?
At the moment it's wine... But I am partial to the rainbow!!

What is your middle name?
Jane

The last song you listened to?
Money Maker - The Black Keys

Dogs or Cats?
Dogs - so much personality, and devotion. No matter how bad your day has been, they can always tell and put a smile on your face!

Something I haven't told anyone on the blog yet?
I really wasn't expecting anyone to read this. I just thought this would be somewhere to organise my thoughts, not somewhere to people would come to read - that is just a fantastic bonus. Thank you to the 37 people who are now 'following' me.

And the award goes to.....

http://theramblingsofmrsbebe.blogspot.com/ for her rants and beautiful pictures - she takes photos like I wish I could, and I'm still amazed that she is the same size as me, but dresses completely differently, with stunning results. Honestly woman, you're stunning and my complete #ladycrush.

Next I'd like to award http://aroselikethis.blogspot.com/ mainly for her adorableness!! She spends most of her time swooning over Ed Sheeran lyrics and stressing about uni, when really she should be proud of the image she puts across... some of that confidence you seem to have should be rubbing off on you soon pet.

Hope to see you all in #pluslondon2.

Much love my lovelies,

What I haven't bought...

Okay, so as I've already mentioned, Frugal February started properly for me at the weekend, but being in work is probably the time I'm more likely to get my purse out.

To date, I've NOT spent the following:
  • 2 x Starbucks Skinny Sugarfree Hazelnut Latte (small) = £3.50
  • 2 x 75ml Diet Coke = £2.20
  • 2 x chocolate bar = £1.40
              • Total = £7.10
Now, for 2 days, I've now saved enough for a top from ASDA, or a cheap album on iTunes. Or a book.

So **fingers crossed** this continues in a similar fashion... although I know that with Plus London Meet Up at the weekend, I'll be hemorrhaging money, but I will try to limit taxis, instead going for an Oyster Card.

To put it in perspective, if I can live like this for 20 days, I'll have enough for that handbag... although not to pay off my debt, but that's not the point. A hand bag you say? Not just any handbag:

I'm thinking about a Mean March as well...?

Much love my lovelies,

K x
